How a one-time act of kindness became a beloved candy company — and a lasting tribute to a brother gone too soon.
Born From Kindness in a Crisis
Rewind to mid-March 2020 when COVID-19 closed the state's bars, restaurants, and the entire service industry, leaving thousands of people unemployed, scared, and helpless.
I was fortunate to have job security during the pandemic, so I developed a strong desire to help those in need around me. This resulted in a small philanthropic endeavor—a one-time thing, or so I thought. I sold my homemade Buckeye confections and donated the proceeds to my friends in the service industry.
For years I've had a strong love and talent for whipping up and sharing Buckeyes, a peanut butter and chocolate confection shaped to resemble the nut from Ohio's state tree. I'd even earned myself a nickname: The Buckeye Lady.
A Sweet Tribute to a Brother Loved Beyond Words
Soon after this philanthropic pandemic project, I was searching for a life preserver of my own to distract me from the horrific grief following the loss of my brother Jeremy. Much as my beloved rescue pups Ruby and Ginger tried to comfort me in this terrible time, I needed to find a positive outlet to get me through.
The Buckeye Lady was born in honor of Jeremy, who absolutely loved The Ohio State Buckeyes football team, always devoured my classic Buckeye in a single bite, and never met a dog he didn't immediately love.
The Buckeye Lady has introduced this often unfamiliar treat to people around the world, including New Zealand to England, California to Massachusetts, and everywhere in between!
